Haqq; Batil, the Truth and False
February 9, 2008 § 4 Comments
My brother has been visiting with me from Portland, OR. He and I were very close growing up and as a result of that closeness early on there is always a fondness even if we are at far distances from each other. He visited our 39th Street Center, he listened to the sohbet, participated in zikr, spent some time meeting the people at the center and sat with Seyh Efendi’s wakil (deputy), to discuss more personal matters of faith (iman) and worship (ibadat). My brother is a “big shot” lawyer who is surrounded by a busy world of people racing after dunya (material things), and it is exhausting. He doesn’t have to tell me its exhausting, although he does, I can see it on his face. When he came to the 39th Street Center his energy was drained. He seemed to be running on pure enthusiasm, to be together again, it was good to see each other after being apart for so many years. But after sohbet and zikr he looked so much happier. He face was brighter and his energy was up.
It was easy to recognize that he felt better after sohbet and zikr because, that is in fact the reason we go to 39th street. To associate with our shaykh and to absorb whatever blessing is coming down in that association. We begin the association with Bismillah ar-Rahman ir-Rahim so it is a Holy association and Holy things are coming down with Allah Almighty’s permission. Sohbet and zikr is like honey, if you put honey in the open bees are going to come. However, mosquitoes, flies and all sorts of creatures also come to the honey. “Everyone has to take their share from it”. The bees don’t fight with the other creatures, the mosquitoes, flies and anything else that may come. They all take what is for them, alhamdulillah.
During the sohbet a very important point was made, that everyone and there is emphasis on everyone, will have to pick a side. What sides? There is Haqq and Batil. That which is true is Haqq; that which is false is Batil. Either we are on the side of Truth or we are on the side of Falsehood. What Seyh Efendi’s wakil is saying is that those on the side of Truth have to be on the same road. But what does that mean? “It means that they have to understand each other.” Those on the side of Truth have to respect each other and the ways of the other. Concerning those choosing Falsehood, our shaykh is saying it doesn’t matter much about them, they are already together anyway. In fact they are all over each other; they are eating each other; competing for lordship of the World (dunya). Such a busy world of people.
We are facing the second Period of Ignorance (jahiliyya). The Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) said that during the second Period of Ignorance people will have certain knowledge. The people of the second Period of Ignorance will have a knowledge of somethings and will not accept anything from anyone. It is reported by ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that The Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) said,
“Near the establishment of the Hour, there will be the days of Al-Harj, and the religious knowledge will be taken away (vanish i.e. by the death of Religious scholars) and general ignorance will spread.” Abu Musa said, “Al-Harj, in the Ethiopian language, means killing,” Ibn Mas’ud added: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying; (It will be) from among the most wicked people who will be living at the time when the Hour will be established.” (Sahih Bukhari)
The second Period of Ignorance is going to be worst than the first. Because, during the first period people were merely ignorant. And when someone from the Sahaba spoke to them, they were listening, comparing and accepting because it was better knowledge. And so many accepted, just look at Islam today, so many accepted. The Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) came and hundreds of thousands followed. Those who opposed him only did so because they had no knowledge of what it was he was speaking of. They were holding on to their father’s traditions, the traditions of those that came before them. I have sympathy for them because they did not know any better. The Sahaba were able to properly show them what Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) brought and they accepted. There was no argument. Our shaykh is saying,
“The only one’s who were threated were those people who were the knowledgeable people for that time, like Abu Jahil.”
Abu Jahil, the Father of Ignorance, knew how to read and write. Yet the Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) was an un-lettered man. Abu Jahil and those like him knew what was going on in the business world, they knew the activities of the world. They also knew that what the Holy Prophet’s message meant for them in terms of their political and economical dealings. The Holy Prophet’s message required them to change, to stop conducting business, political, social and economical matters in the way that they were accustom to. In the way that they were benefiting in terms of worldly success. Those who were ignorant did not fight, they sat; they listened; they accepted and they benefited as the result of other-worldly success.
The End Times (ahir zaman); the second Period of Ignorance will be worse than the first because people will study religion; they will know how to read and write but they are not going to accept anything. They will fight; they will not sit for anyone; they will not listen to anyone and they will not accept anything except that which fits to them. The inverse of the first Period of Ignorance where the group with knowledge were the minority. Now this group is the majority. And they are all competing. The Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) is saying that they will read and write, but they will be ignorant of what they are reading! Abu Musa (may Allah be Pleased with him) reported that the Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessing be upon him) said,
“Near the establishment of the Hour there will be days during which (religious) knowledge will be taken away (vanish) and general ignorance will spread, and there will be Al-Harj in abundance, and Al-Harj means killing.” (Sahih Bukari)
Do you think that now is the time that Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) is referring? In 1954 the population of the world was 2.444 billion. There were 322 million Muslims, 800 million Christians (128 million Orthodox, 470 million Catholics and 202 million Protestants), 11 million Jews, and 1.311 billion polytheists and unbelievers, who did not believe in any heavenly book or any prophet. Which number do you think has increased the most since this time compared to today’s population of 6,649,516,227 (U.S. Census Bureau, 02/09/08)?
What is the Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) instructing us to do when this time comes? Hudhaifa bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated a story saying,
“The people used to ask Allah’s Apostle about the good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere, then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?” He said, “Yes.” I said, ‘Will there be any good after that evil?” He replied, “Yes, but it will be tainted (not pure.)” I asked, “What will be its taint?” He replied, “(There will be) some people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of their deeds and disapprove of some others.” I asked, “Will there be any evil after that good?” He replied, “Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell) Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire.” I said, “O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?” He said, “They will be from our own people and will speak our language.” I said, “What do you order me to do if such a state should take place in my life?” He said, “Stick to the group of Muslims and their Imam (ruler).” I said, “If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam (ruler)?” He said, “Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state.”” (Sahih Bukhari)
Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) is openly instructing us to follow an Imam. And if someone is dismissing the Holy Prophet (may Peace and Blessings be upon him) it is impossible for them to reach Allah Almighty. Do not allow your ego to be your Imam, your leader, that is asking for trouble. We need to know that Allah Almighty is the Creator; that we are creatures and that there is an order to creation. Haqq, if we begin to understand that, then perhaps we will begin to understand ourselves and each other by the Grace of Allah Almighty.
