Things Are Bad When…

November 19, 2006 § 3 Comments

Muslims, Muslims and more Muslims, seems all you hear or see in mainstream media today. We Muslims have become an icon in American and European media; a cash-cow of sorts. I mean all a newspaper has to do is drum-up a catchy headline and a picture of an Arab, Asian or just a bearded man in a thobe or niqabi sister in her “Friday’s best black” and presto instant success. But you know whats even worse, when these media generated images and stories begin to effect Muslims the same way they effect everyone else. That is to say, you know its bad when you are afraid of your own people, Egyptian-American Gigi Douban discusses this further in a NPR commentary,

“When commentator Gigi Douban was taking her kids to school on a recent morning, a man in a white truck stopped beside her. He was listening to sermons in Arabic and she immediately thought “truck bomb.” Douban, who is of Egyptian descent, says her mother listened to similar sermons on a tape player all the time.” (G. Douban, NPR) audio2

Yeah, I heard that piece on NPR, too. Its interesting, but not surprising how media affects people. But, then again, we should know best about getting a the hives from people who we know often turn out to be rather extremist and anti-American even while living here. Before 9-11, no one gave it a thought, but afterwards, i for one, was shocked to see just what such thinking is capable of producing. Thus, I now take it much more seriously than I did before, when I wrote it off as bluster.

Leave it to the neocon idiot to justify stereotypes. Milking 911 to the extreme as usual.

I don’t know Omar… I know what you are saying is probably true somewhere, however me and my constituents felt more victimized than enlightened after 9-11, although there was enlightenment… the victimization far outweighed.

Maybe you were able to see more clearly the company you kept, perhaps?
