islamist moderat partyIn a groundbreaking event, Mauritania is holding its first governmental elections in 21 years. Up until now this Islamic Republic has been ruled as a autocracy, a form of government that is synonymous with dictatorship. Mauritania is located in Africa positioned interestingly like a go-between black West Africa and Arab Northern Africa.

However, despite obstacles of national poverty and the experimentation of Islamist Parties in mainstream politics, Mauritanians are enthusiastic about the democratic developments as suggested by military leader Colonel ElyOuld Mohamed Vall saying he was,

“satisfied to see Mauritanians embark on the road to democracy and consequently on the way to economic development and political stability.” (AFP)
