Petition for U.S. Jewish Solidarity with Arabs
September 2, 2006 § 4 Comments
On August 8, 2006 a petition was published by Jewish citizens of the U.S. in support of the Arab peoples of the Middle-East. The petition condemns Israel’s “violence” and goes on to say that they are “outraged” that these events are happening in the name of the Jewish people. The petition puts a call forward to Jews everywhere to stand up and hold the U.S. “accountable” for facilitating and benefiting from Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
I was quite surprised to stumble upon this petition which I initially found on a blog entitled, “The Corner Report“. The petition is fairly concise and has nearly one thousand signatures. From the beginning you understand that these people mean business when the petition declares,
“As Jews of conscience living in the United States, we are outraged by the violence being perpetrated in our name both as Jews and as U.S. citizens. We, the undersigned, represent Jews across the United States who are choosing to stand in solidarity with the peoples of Gaza and Lebanon.”
The group is trying to publish the petition in the New York Times and is also asking that Jews of “conscience” join them by signing the petition. It is an interesting read even if you are not Jewish, you may read the original petition here.
