Walaykum as'salam,

"Articulate their thoughts on the subject in such a fantastic way that I was totally blown way"

Was it really that good? Man, I'm getting better by the day.

Gives me an idea though. Perhaps I should write professionally....... Maybe charge bloggers for hosting my comments?

Ok, enough of my ridiculous attempts to be funny. Sister Lucky Begum, thank you for your kind comments. Perhaps you can share your thoughts regarding this topic?

PS: I was previously under the name 'Ahle Sunnah Uprising', but have now changed it to 'Sher-e-Ghousia'. Apologies in advance for any confusion.

Assalamu Alaikum

Saifuddin

I have come across a discussion that took place on the 7th November 2007 on the importance of Heritage and I was well impressed with the conversation with Ahle Sunnah Uprising and their views on the issue. I would just like to say that its finally nice to hear another Bangladeshi summarise and articulate their thoughts on the subject in such a fantastic way that I was totaly blown way. They have been able to express beautiful my thought exactly. So thank you!

If you could please pass this message to them or if you have their details I would like to link up with them, I would really be gratefull. Overall reading your imformation Saifuddin I have been able to undestand individual interpretation of what heritage means to them.

Regards

Walaikum Assalam,

Well "backwards" implies that a person cannot move with times. By "typical", I meant small traditional aspects, such as, wearing Mehndi/Henna during weddings (Asian tradition), , the way someone decorates their house (some have furniture that resemble the ones back from their homeland), eating certain things at certain times, etc.

so, yeah "typical" is beter than "backwards. A person can eat in certain way, dress in a certain way, and even act in a certain way, but it is still possible to move fowards with the times. If someone is "backwards", then they will have a hard time, due to the fast moving world we live in.

Hope that makes sense.

Assalamu Alaikum,

A very interesting post. Mash'Allah!

My parents are from Bangladesh, but I was born in the UK. But I have to admit, I probably go under the phrase, "British by paper, Bengali by nature"... oops, I meant Muslim by nature.

Here in the Uk there seems to be a mixed attitude regarding this area.

On one hande, some are so glued to their culture/origins that they cannot adapt to the "western" ways of living.

Whilst on the other hand we have the new the so called "third" generation of the ethnic minority, who want to distance themeselves from their background, history and culture. Going so far as to forget their mother tongue, therefore finding it difficult to talk to their elder relatives. They seem to consider the traditions of their parents as "typical".

However, there is still a decent percentage of the ethnic minority in the UK the understand and respect their background, whilst moving on with the times and adapting to their environments.

Thank you, I did appreciate the post. Sultan Abdulmecid was a great benefactor to the Irish people. Sadly one that is mostly forgotten - though not by my family.

It's really quite strange. My family has always maintained a great respect for the Ottoman Empire though they were often our adversaries we never seem to have thought of them as enemies. It may go back to how they and my Templar ancestors waged war; my family has nothing but good things to say about how the Ottomans both fought and dealt with prisoners.

I live in BedStuy, so under the rule of Bush & Cheney - so tyrant may be applicable. LOL

I was more thinking of cultural values and practices that might be at odds with, in this case, American society as a whole. I believe that one must integrate to a certain point or accept that discrimination will result.

Leaving old / ancestral hatreds behinds is also needful. I'm of Irish descent, but - even if I obeyed the law - it would be bad to nurse a grudge against the British. Yes, I know nursing a grudge would be frowned upon anyway but such a thing is part of my heritage.
