Salam,

I'm glad to have found your interesting article regarding Geishas. I have added your blog to my Geisha resource list, hope you don't mind. Nowadays, the number of useful and free available Geisha articles and sites getting less and less by the year. What a shame.

Anyway, if you or your reader like to get more Geisha links, you might request my free link-mail letter (possibly the largest Geisha resource guide on the net) below. No commitments whatsoever but over 110 Geisha & Maiko links for you to explore.

The link is:

<The Hidden World of Geishas and Maikos>

Rainer

P.S.
If you or any visitor has Geisha links not in my list, please let me know in your blog which I will visit from time to time again. I'm always in search of new related information I can add. Thanks in advance.

Carnival of the Vanities #219: The Thanksgiving Edition

Hello and welcome to the Carnival of the Vanities. This week's 219th edition bears a Thanksgiving theme, even though Thanksgiving has come and gone. I personally feel that thanks is something we should give all through the year. One thing...

Salam,

That is an interesting comparison, maybe you would like to write an article on the subject, discussing those comparisons as a guest on my blog? Consider it…

Sure, but sometime in the second-half of december once the semester is over.

As-salaamu 'alaikum,

"I’ve long considered the Japanese Geisha to be similar to concubinage in Classical Fiqh and Muslim societies of eras gone by."
That is an interesting comparison, maybe you would like to write an article on the subject, discussing those comparisons as a guest on my blog? Consider it...

"One can construe the geisha as a woman’s assertion of (financial) independence in a highly patriarchal society."
Agreed, however not only the assertion of financial freedom but social liberalism as well.

"Excellent, posts this like this one are the reason I submitted to your feed."
Thank you James... your compliments are much appreciated.

One can construe the geisha as a woman's assertion of (financial) independence in a highly patriarchal society. However, as long as the geishas are filling a societal need, do they then further entrench the patriarchal society instead of challenging it?

Good read and nice illustration. I've long considered the Japanese Geisha to be similar to concubinage in Classical Fiqh and Muslim societies of eras gone by. But, I get what you mean by saying thier activities are haram / makruh: saki, multiple partners. I think the primary difference between Islamic Concubinage was that the concubine's sexual services were only for one man, unlike the Geisha...and Geisha's seem to have been well trained in many arts unlike the slave concubines of the medieval Islamic world.
